Water Lab Test

ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) and NDOC (Non-Dissolved Organic Carbon) lab tests are two different types of analyses commonly used in aquarium and reef tank maintenance to assess water quality parameters.
  1. ICP Testing:
    • ICP testing is a comprehensive method for analyzing the elemental composition of aquarium water. It measures the concentration of various elements, including major, minor, and trace elements, in the water.
    • This testing method uses inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) to detect and quantify elements present in the water sample.
    • ICP testing provides detailed insights into the levels of essential elements such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, strontium, and various trace elements. It helps aquarists maintain proper water chemistry for the health and growth of corals and other reef inhabitants.
    • Aquarists often use ICP testing periodically to monitor and adjust their dosing regimens and ensure that water parameters are within optimal ranges for reef aquariums.
  2. NDOC Testing:
    • NDOC testing, or Non-Dissolved Organic Carbon testing, focuses on measuring the concentration of organic carbon compounds that are not dissolved in the water column. These compounds include particulate organic matter, detritus, and organic waste.
    • Unlike traditional dissolved organic carbon (DOC) testing, which measures the concentration of organic compounds dissolved in the water, NDOC testing specifically targets non-dissolved organic carbon.
    • High levels of NDOC in aquarium water can contribute to nutrient buildup, algae growth, and water quality issues. By quantifying NDOC levels, aquarists can assess the effectiveness of filtration systems, nutrient export methods, and overall tank maintenance practices.
    • NDOC testing provides valuable information for reef aquarium hobbyists seeking to maintain pristine water quality and minimize the risk of algae outbreaks and other issues associated with organic waste accumulation.
Both ICP and NDOC testing are valuable tools for reef aquarium enthusiasts and professionals alike, allowing for precise monitoring and management of water quality parameters essential for the health and vitality of coral reefs and their inhabitants.
